Do you Know what to Avoid When Remodeling?

Remodeling a Kitchen? 8 Trends To Avoid

Yesterday Faith shared a photo of what is considered the ideal kitchen for thousands of internet readers, according to a survey by Houzz. It's interesting, then, to compare that with another recent article, this one from Forbes on the top trends to avoid if you're renovating a kitchen. Would the two lists contradict each other? Here's what I discovered:
A trend is, by definition, always changing, so it would follow that current kitchen desirables —all those features that make a kitchen so shareable, pinnable, and covetable, like the white cabinets, the farmhouse sink, the dark floors— might not hold up to the test of time. Or would they?
Forbes interviewed John Petrie, the 2013 president-elect of the National Kitchen and Bath Association and owner of MH Custom Cabinetry in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, for his take on the longevity of current kitchen remodeling trends. Among his list of trends to avoid were a few "yeah, okay" suggestions, like appliance garages and trash compactors. (Those weren't high on my list anyway.)
But a few other trends on his list may be more surprising to you: he recommends avoiding farmhouse sinks ("In 2011 and 2012, everybody wanted an apron-front kitchen sink... This year, we haven’t done a single one"), pot racks or range hoods as focal points ("All the rage in 2009, ’10 and ’11... but their popularity is waning"), and colorful appliances ("Appliance manufacturers will tell you that white or arctic or ice is the new stainless, but stainless is still the king...It really is today's neutral").
